Freelance Whales // Fanfarlo @ the Echo, Los Angeles

Last night I was lucky enough to get into the sold out Freelance Whales // Fanfarlo show at the Echo in Los Angeles. Definitely a double-whammy feature as both acts are extremely up and coming.

I had only heard a couple tracks from Fanfarlo (hailing from London...but includes a Swedish man...automtatic bonus street cred points), but experiencing them live was the ultimate seal of approval. It's nice to see their wide array of instrument use, ranging from your basic drums/guitars to mandolins and clarinets. I normally don't like comparing bands and saying that "band x is just a wannabe band y " but I think saying a band sounding like another isn't a bad thing at all. Nothing wrong with a little influential means, ya know what I'm sayin'? If I had to describe Fanfarlo, I'd say that they are Beirut meets Arcade Fire (some of you are thinking "O.M.G. NO ONE CAN SAY THAT ABOUT ARCADE FIRE!!" but yeah I said it, now lick my crusty ass.

Freelance Whales hail from New York (Lots of blogs/sites say they are from Williamsburg..but I think they are from Queens? I think most of the music review sites these days automatically give a minium 8.0 if the band is from Williamsburg/Brooklyn) They've busked in New York metro stations and makeshift spaces, with the use of instruments including the banjo, mini korg, glockenspiel, drums, bass, guitar..pretty legit combination with excellent harmonization factor = legitass sounds

J. Chorng HQ

Yesterday J. Chorng and I rode his motorcycle (Brokeback style, with me in the back) to grab some legit ass Shabu Shabu in Rowland Heights.

Surprisingly I have never published photos of his HQ as it is a wonderland and think tank for his ever-so innovative projects. Head over to his blog here or just simply click the link on my blogroll over to the far right ----------->

A new HQ is set to fortify late 2009/early 2010 in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles.. as opposed to the OC HQ (below) , the vision of the new HQ is monochromatic and more dark-toned steeze. We'll see how that goes.

I attained a 650c Durostinger tyre. These are not sold in the US so I was beyond stoked to find some kid on ebay who had imported some from Japan. Turns out this kid lived by Venice Beach so I got to meet up with him, shot the shiz, and departed with what could be considered a gem in the tyre market.










I'll try to take a photo of the pedal whip with the new tyre on it.

Daihatsu Basket //

Not sure if Daihatsus have stepped up their game quality-wise, but if this is produced, it's a for sure buy. Debuted at the Tokyo motor show last month, this minimalist inspired vehicle is powered by a 3 cylinder 650cc engine so it's pretty weak but extremely efficient.

With 4 wheel drive capability, this bad boy can take on some rough ass terrain, that's fasho.

Crooks and Castles Footwear

Although Crooks and Castles' usual product is not exactly my rage, I have to admit their new footwear line due to launch Spring 2010 is definitely interesting as the streetwear brand clearly steers away from the hypebeast "crazy color x all over print x too much going on" look. Using monotone colorways with simplistic designs with suede and canvas materialization, it's pretty obvious who their influences were. They utilize what seems to be an imitation Italian cup sole..a look destined to look other brands that price their shoes at minimum 300.. I am pretty sure these kicks are priced under 100 (I may be wrong?)


The Chukka model was a standout, yeah, that's fasho.

Hit up the Noah and the Whale show @ the Roxy with GB MOONZ. He was equipped with a Canon FG, we took some shots, had a laugh, headed on home.

Supreme LA //

Yesterday I checked out the Supreme store on Fairfax. I've always been a fan of Supreme in a weird way..(def. not in the hypebeast way ; ) .not entirely in the love-of-product way but more of their branding techniques. It's always been amazing to me how powerful and successful they have been able brand themselves over the years. The brand is insanely sought after all over the world, with their box sticker massively producely yet still rare to find for sale. Some of my favorite skateboarders have also been Supreme affiliated (Jason Dill, Girl Team, etc..) so that's probably also been a factor for my liking of the brand.

The skate bowls they install in their stores are also an infatuation of mine, the exposed underlying wood construction is uber sexy. I remember a couple years ago there was an Arkitip issue on these bowls.

Little Dragon //

A coworker recommended the Swedish fourtet from Gothenburg. At first the band name was a turn off for me but after listening to their new album "Machine Dreams", they could be called Diarhea Eaters and that would be chill too.

No Guitar, No Need. Avante-garde electronica steeze. Great tunes for a chill-out sesh in joemama's basement.
